News: Tire Recycling & Pyrolysis

On November 20, Pyrum Innovations AG (Pyrum) received the unlimited delivery approval from Continental for the Pyrum recovered Carbon Black (rCB) of the plant in Dillingen/Saar. As part of the Continental audit, Pyrum successfully carried out the process capability analysis for the two new lines in recent weeks. The analysis serves to evaluate the short and long-term process stability. The values determined show a long-term capability (Cpk) of 2.16 for TAD 2 and 2.70 for TAD 3 as well as a short-term capability (Ppk) of 2.49 (TAD 2) and 3.38 (TAD 3). The results are above the required standard values specified by the automotive industry (Cpk: 1.33; Ppk: 1.67).

According to Rosehill, its modular drainage system has demonstrated its effectiveness in ongoing testing across diverse real-world scenarios. Designed to protect infrastructure such as roads and railways from flooding, the system effectively manages water flow, handling everything from frequent rain to extreme weather events like 1-in-1,000-year storms. As a surface drain, it matches the discharge flow rate of a 225mm pipe while requiring over 70% less ground work.

The Tire Recycling Foundation (TRF), a joint initiative led by the U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association (USTMA) and the Tire Industry Association (TIA), announced its Board of Directors and Board President, Anne Forristall Luke, President and CEO of USTMA. The inaugural Board consists of 15 global industry leaders with deep knowledge and expertise in the manufacturing, recycling and transportation industries. This diverse group will help steer the Foundation’s mission to drive innovation in tire reuse markets, secure funding for critical projects, allocate grants for research, education, intervention and demonstration projects and enhance the sustainability of the tire recycling supply chain.

Synthos, a global producer of synthetic rubber, has announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Sumitomo Rubber Industries (SRI), a Japanese tire manufacturer, to promote the development and use of high-performance rubber powders for the production of sustainable tires.

The workshop "Rubberised asphalt between myths and reality. How to overcome the obstacles", organized under the LIFE RE-PLAN CITY LIFE and LIFE SILENT projects, aims to raise awareness about the use of Recycled Tyre Materials (RTMs) in transport infrastructure, urban planning, and sports facilities. These projects focus on promoting circular economy practices and improving the sustainability of road construction while addressing environmental and economic challenges.

Bridgestone India Private Ltd. (BSID), a subsidiary of Bridgestone Corporation (Bridgestone), announced a strategic growth investment to expand capacity and capability in India. The investment will be directed to the Bridgestone Pune Plant and the Indore Plant to reinforce the company’s premium-mass strategy. The collective investment will be approximately US$85 million with expansion scheduled to start from the beginning of 2025.

The Tire Industry Project (TIP) has announced an open call for projects (OCP) to advance scientific research into tire wear emissions and their environmental impacts. The initiative, launched on November 12, aims to foster innovative solutions for assessing and mitigating the effects of tire wear particles on air, water, soil, and sediment.

ELTs make up nearly 2% of the total global waste, and an estimated one billion ELTs are discarded yearly. This waste flow is growing dramatically year after year. But businesses follow circular economy principles, they begin to view this trash as an opportunity. Through chemical pyrolysis, ELTs can be broken down into reusable commodities like recovered Carbon Black, recovered Pyrolysis Oil, and recovered Steel.
