Gravita’s African plants earn ISCC certifications, expanding access to European recycling markets
Gravita has announced that its recycling facilities in Ghana, Togo, and Senegal have received ISCC PLUS and ISCC EU certifications, strengthening the company’s position in international recycling markets and enabling certified products from its African operations to enter regulated European supply chains.
The certifications confirm that the plants meet internationally recognized standards for sustainability, traceability, and greenhouse gas reporting. They also expand Gravita’s certified operational footprint, adding to the company’s Romania facility, which already holds both certifications.
With this development, materials produced at the African plants, including tire-derived oil, pyrolysis oil, recovered carbon black (rCB), rubber compound powder, and rubber compound sheets, are expected to support demand across Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.
ISCC certification and market compliance
The International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) framework is widely used to verify that materials are sourced, processed, and traded under established environmental and social standards.
ISCC PLUS focuses on mass balance auditing for circular and recycled materials, while ISCC EU verifies compliance with the European Union’s Renewable Energy Directive. Together, the certifications provide access to markets where documented environmental compliance is increasingly required.
For companies involved in tire recycling, pyrolysis, and broader rubber recycling, certification can improve access to buyers seeking traceable, lower-carbon raw materials for manufacturing and industrial use.
Expanding supply of recycled tire materials
Gravita’s certified African facilities produce materials derived from pyrolysis and rubber processing streams, including recovered carbon black, a material increasingly used as an alternative carbon source in industrial applications.
The plants also produce tire-derived oil, which can be used as an industrial feedstock or energy source depending on regulatory requirements and end-market applications. In addition, rubber compounds from recycling operations can contribute to downstream products tied to sustainability initiatives in construction and manufacturing.
As demand grows for certified circular inputs, products generated through tire recycling technologies such as pyrolysis are becoming more important in supply chains focused on reducing reliance on virgin fossil-based materials.
Competitive position for African recycling facilities
The certifications come at a time when European regulations are placing greater emphasis on traceability, emissions reporting, and documented sustainability practices across supply chains.
By securing ISCC PLUS and ISCC EU certification, Gravita’s facilities in West Africa are positioned to supply verified recycled materials into markets where compliance is becoming a standard purchasing requirement rather than a competitive differentiator.
For the wider African recycling industry, the certifications demonstrate that regional processing plants can align with international standards in carbon accounting, operational transparency, and sustainable sourcing.
Outlook for certified recycling markets
As regulatory frameworks continue to evolve, certified suppliers of recycled materials, including outputs from pyrolysis and tire recycling, may see increased opportunities in Europe and other markets that prioritize verified circular materials.
Gravita stated that it plans to continue pursuing global certifications across its recycling operations, with a focus on compliance, market access, and supporting customer demand for certified sustainable raw materials.
For African recyclers, meeting these certification standards may open new commercial opportunities, particularly in markets where green energy, circular manufacturing, and verified sustainability practices are gaining greater importance.
