EU moves toward restriction of toxic tire chemical 6PPD
The Netherlands and Austria plan to jointly draft a proposal to restrict the use of 6PPD, a chemical used in car tires to extend their lifespan. The initiative follows growing concern over the environmental impact of 6PPD and its transformation product, 6PPD-quinone, which has been shown to be toxic, particularly to salmon species.
Bureau REACH identified 6PPD as a substance of concern in 2023. Tire wear particles containing the chemical are washed from roads into surrounding waters, where 6PPD-quinone can cause serious harm to aquatic life. The Netherlands and Austria plan to work with industry over the next two years to define restrictions and encourage the development of safer alternatives.
Research from the University of Vienna has shown that chemicals from tires, including 6PPD, can enter the food chain. In the U.S., a study by University of Washington and Washington State University linked 6PPD-quinone to Coho salmon deaths, prompting action by the California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC). The DTSC has announced plans to investigate the chemical further in collaboration with tire manufacturers.
These potential restrictions aim to align with international efforts to reduce the environmental risks associated with tire-related pollutants.
